Preservatives: The most dangerous ingredients in skincare products are preservatives. Preservatives are toxic, hormone disruptors and can potentially be carcinogenic. Many of the preservatives such as parabens, formaldehyde and releasers like grapefruit seed extract, phenoxyethanol, imidazolidnyl urea, isothiazolinones, benzoic acid and it’s derivatives like benzoate can accumulate over time and trigger cancer cells when your immune system is weak.

Parabens: Preservatives such as parabens (methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl and butylparaben) are found in most of the personal care products. Parabens mimic estrogen and are linked to breast cancer, lowered sperm count, lowered testosterone levels, testicular atrophy, infertility, increased testicular cancer and undescended testes. Grapefruit Seed Extract: The chemical structure of grapefruit seed extract is like that of paraben and can be a harmful endocrine disruptor.

Aspect of the antimicrobial efficacy of grapefruit seed extract & its relation to preservatives substance contained. "Many grapefruit seed extracts tested had benzethoninum chloride. Fresh grapefruit seed extract did not show antimicrobial property."

Formaldehyde: Preservative chemicals like diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, DMDM hydantoin, quaternium 15 and sodium hydroxymethylglycinate from soy release formaldehyde which are carcinogens. Formaldehyde is also a skin irritant and sensitizer.

strong>Methylisothiazolinone and Methylchloroisothiazolinone: While legal to be used as preservatives in the United States, these ingredients are banned in Europe and are considered potential neurotoxins and can have harmful effects on the nervous system.

Triclosan and Resorcinol: Used as an anti-bacterial agent and a preservative, these ingredients are known to be hormonal disrupters and can trigger cancer cells.

Benzoic acid/alcohol and Benzoate: Any ingredient with benzoic or benzoate can breakdown and can become dangerous to pregnancy. OSHA prohibits pregnant women from working in environments with benzyne exposure. Benzyl benzoate can react with vitamin C to form carcinogenic benzyne. Potential side effects include blister formation, itching, scaling of skin, difficulty urinating and sudden loss of consciousness.

Salicylic acid and benzyl salicylate: Salicylic acid, willow bark extract, benzyl salicylate: These salicylic acid ingredients when used as preservatives in leave on products can trigger ringing in the ear symptoms (tinnitus).

Benzyl salicylate: Potential for neurotoxicity and recommended to be avoided by pregnant and nursing mothers.

Potassium sorbate: Used as fungicide has the potential change DNA and can be genotoxic.

Chlorphenesin: A preservative, known to cause eczema in dry and sensitive skin and can negatively affect the nervous system and cause breathing difficulties primarily in children.

Phthalate and EDTA: Dibutyl phthalate is linked to cancer and is present in nail polish, perfume, soft plastics and skin care products.

Betaine: Banned by CA prop 65, known to cause allergic reactions and contact dermatitis.

Nitrite or Nitrate: Nitrite or nitrate present in skincare or food can react with other ingredients like betaine to form nitrosamine, which is a carcinogen.

Laurel Sulfate: Cleansing agent Sodium/ammonium laurel sulfate and highly irritant and may strip the protective layer of the skin.

Laureth Sulfate: Cleansing agent Sodium/ammonium laureth sulfate may contain carcinogens such as dioxane.

PPG, PEG: Ingredients with PPG and PEG in their name are made with ethylene oxide and may contain a carcinogen called dioxane.

Diethanolamine (DEA) & Triethanolamine (TEA): Cleansing or neutralizing agents such as DEA and TEA and its derivatives like DEA sodium laurel sulfate are considered carcinogens.

Propylene Glycol: Propylene Glycol, a commonly used solvent and humectant, is a known allergen and sensitizer and may be contaminated with carcinogens such as dioxane.

Pesticide: Pesticides, like parabens, are hormonal disruptors and are linked to potential cancer.

Dyes: Some FD&C and D&C dyes are considered carcinogens.

Artificial fragrance: Artificial fragrance causes inflammation and slows the wound healing process. Additionally, almost 5,000 chemicals used in fragrance can react with other ingredients present in skin care products to become indirect carcinogens.

Lanolin: Lanolin, derived from sheep, can be an endocrine disruptor because carcinogens such as dioxin and DDT may be present in the grass that the sheep ingest.

Alcohol: Alcohol dries and irritates the skin which causes inflammation and strip the protective lipid layer.

Gluten: All Hylunia ingredients are gluten free and is an allergen to some people.

GMO: Genetically modified organisms can be considered harmful. All Hylunia Skincare products ingredients must be sourced from non-GMO plants.

Lead, Mercury and Arsenic: Some natural plant extracts may contain heavy metals and therefore affect the nervous system and are considered neurotoxins. Hylunia only uses plant extracts that are organic, wild crafted, purest pharmaceutical grade (USP) or food grade.
