Rosacea and Skin Care – A Letter from Dr. Lingam, Hylunia’s Co-Founder

I personally got involved in finding a skin care for the sensitive skin of my infant daughter 25 years ago. Since there were none, I formed a research team headed by Brain Jegasothy, M.D, formerly Chairman, Department of Dermatology at University of Pittsburgh, to find an answer.

The Hylunia research team—with more than 200 years of combined experience—discovered that almost all skin care products contain ingredients that cause inflammation. Studies after studies confirm that continuous inflammation is linked to aging, diseases and potentially cancer.

The team formulated a skin care product free of fragrance, parabens, formaldehyde, diazolidinyl urea, propylene glycol, lanolin, alcohol and phthalate and other toxins. Also, the team incorporated antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients like green tea, pomegranate, noni, calendula, as well as plant peptides to minimize reaction to the ingredients.

Furthermore, the team developed a water-based formulation with hyaluronic acid, which holds approximately 1,000 times its weight in water. Hyaluronic acid hydrates the skin naturally. It is very important for rosacea skin to be free of moisturizers with oils, waxes and capric/caprylic triglycerides because these ingredients plug up pores and can trigger acne.

Our formulation philosophy makes Hylunia idea for anyone with rosacea. It provides a safe alternative to the irritating and inflammatory ingredients found in most skin care products.

A five-year study conducted by Dr. Adam Maibach from the University of California San Diego, published in the Journal of the Academy of Dermatology (1985, Dec; 13(6):1062-9) found that fragrances, preservatives, dyes, propylene glycol and lanolin caused more than 70% of dermatitis cases.

Everyone with rosacea knows that the skin reacts to certain skin care ingredients, food, alcohol and sun. Most of you are scared to use skin care because you can’t figure out what ingredient may trigger a reaction or flare up. Unfortunately, the ingredients like fragrance, paraben, and dye are the ones that make the products sell but they are also the ones that causes irritation and inflammation and aggravate rosacea.
