Exfoliating 101: Why are so many people doing it wrong?

Exfoliation—the removal of dead skin cells from the surface layers of the skin—is one of the most important steps to maintain healthy skin. This results in the revealing of new skin cells that gives the appearance of a healthier more radiant complexion.

Some of us have a tendency to over-exfoliate, while others tend to not exfoliate enough. As important as exfoliation is, doing it incorrectly can leave skin in pain, irritated, or eventually with permanent damage.

Here’s a list of the most common exfoliating mistakes people make:

Over-exfoliating

Less is more when it comes to exfoliating. Exfoliating more than twice a week can irritate skin and lead to permanent damage. Skin that’s been over-exfoliated may appear irritated, red, dry and can feel sensitive or sore.

Not following up with moisturizer

It’s important to put moisture back into your skin immediately after exfoliation. It helps soothe any irritation caused by exfoliating and replenish moisture lost during the exfoliating ritual. Skipping this step can cause skin to become overly dry and irritated.

Exfoliating with the wrong ingredients

Stick with brands who use natural ingredients and avoid brands that use harsh chemicals. Stay away from scrubs made from Apricot or Walnut. These ingredients are highly abrasive and can cause severe irritation and damage to the skin. We recommend using Hylunia Natural Fruit Acid Exfoliant. This multi-fruit and Hyaluronic Acid exfoliant brings smoothness and radiance to the skin, while unclogging and refining pores.

Exfoliating at the wrong time

There are certain times when you want to avoid exfoliating all together, such as when you have a breakout or any other skin irritations. Exfoliating over them can spread the acne bacteria and make any irritations worse. Hormonal skin can also create unique challenges when exfoliated. Avoid exfoliating if your skin experiences any of these conditions.

Exfoliating dry skin

Always make sure that skin is completely wet before applying any exfoliant. Exfoliating dry skin can lead to irritations and rashes.

Scrubbing too vigorously

Many of us our guilty of scrubbing too vigorously whether it’s with our hands, a washcloth, hand-held device, loofah or with a sponge. People often think that in order for an exfoliant to work, it must be applied fast and rigorously, when actually the product is designed to work on its own without much pressure and pulling of the skin. Gently massage the product in with your fingertips on each area for no more than 30 seconds. Hylunia Grape Seed Exfoliating Scrub for the Face naturally buffs away dead skin cells, while hydrating and maintaining pH balance.

Not exfoliating head to toe

Many of us put a lot of time and effort into exfoliating our faces regularly, but neglect the rest of our bodies. Your face isn’t the only area that can benefit from exfoliation: your body does, too. Make a point of exfoliating you knees, elbows, legs, back, chest, neck, hands, and feet.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you’ll enjoy the benefits of exfoliating more than ever before.
